Supports for School & Education

Understanding how the school system supports children with diverse learning needs can be complex. This section explains key concepts like IEPs, student designations, and accommodations, and includes practical planning resources and tools for families.

These are not funding programs. They are practical guides and trusted resource links to help families understand what supports exist, where to start, and what to think about next.

Understanding school supports

School supports can be confusing because planning, funding, and service delivery often happen through different parts of the education system. These explainers give families plain-language starting points before diving into the resource list below.

What is an IEP?

An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is a written plan developed by a school team to support a student with specific learning, developmental, behavioural, physical, or health-related needs. An IEP outlines the student's goals, accommodations, support strategies, and how progress will be monitored. Families are important members of the IEP team and can be involved in planning and reviewing the document.

What is a Student Designation?

A student designation is a Ministry of Education category used to identify students who require additional educational supports. Designations may help school districts receive funding to support students with disabilities or diverse learning needs. A designation does not automatically guarantee specific services or supports, but it may help schools plan and provide appropriate assistance.

Accommodations vs Modifications

Accommodations change how a student learns or demonstrates learning without changing the learning outcomes. Examples include extra time, assistive technology, or alternative formats. Modifications change the learning outcomes themselves and may involve individualized educational goals that differ from the regular curriculum.

How school funding works

The BC Ministry of Education provides funding to school districts for students with certain designations and support needs. Funding is provided to school districts, not directly to families, and schools determine how supports and services are delivered. Families can work with their school team to discuss their child's needs and available supports.
